carnaval cadiz 0

Cadiz Carnival is world-renowned as a huge street party. It is one of the most famous, well-attended events in the whole of Spain and the third largest event in the world, after Rio and Trinidad.  Over the period of a fortnight, the streets of Cadiz fill up with happy people drinking and dancing. This event attracts thousands of people every year.

Cadiz, known as the 'Small Silver Cup', is transformed into a real party in Carnaval.

The official launch begins with the opening speech, which traditionally is held in the "Plaza de San Antonio".
The origins of Carnival are lost in time, taking written evidence of their existence in the seventeenth century.

At that time the most popular classes held dances and parties, that for their insolence and lust ,were not much liked by the nobility and the Church.

However, over time, aristocracy and clergy eventually resigned to this popular event, to the point that it became institutionalized.

The Gonzalez Hontoria Park provides the unbeatable setting for the Horse Fair where over two hundred casetas are set up and are open for all to enjoy, both Jerezanos and visitors alike. A spectacular Horse Parade takes place throughout the duration of the Fair, with hundreds of horsemen and women attired in the traditional short-jacketed suits, their companions wearing the even more characteristic gypsy dresses, ride around the streets of the Real.

During the Horse Fair there are numerous exhibitions, events and both national and international competitions of Classical Dressage, "Doma Vaquera", RAID, Polo, Driving, Gala Shows by the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, Yeguada de la Cartuja, EQUISUR and Bull Fights, all combining to make the Horse Fair an experience to be enjoyed to the full.

The fair itself takes place around May time attracts thousands of visitors who witness some rather impressive horsemanship along with the bullfights and exhibitions of Sevilliana dancing (flamenco.)

feria del caballo 02

The fair is split into three segments, a live stock and agricultural machinery exhibition, bullfighting and Sevilliana and finally the horse show itself. You’ll see Spanish purebreds, the famous Andlusian thoroughbreds, purebred Arabs and Anglo-Arabs show jumping, vaulting and cowboy and classical dressage.

However the highlight of the show is without a doubt the “Como Bailan los Caballos Andaluces” or the Dancing Andalusian Horses.

feria del caballo 03

This is absolutely amazing (and world famous) and performed by the world famous Real Escuela de Arte Ecuestre (Royal
School of Equestrian Art) which is based in Jerez itself. Just think of Horse riding Ballet and you’ll be thinking along the right lines.

The Holy Week (Semana Santa) is a significant religious festival in Jerez de la Frontera in Andalucia, in the southern Spain, declared to be of National Tourist Interest, dates back over hundreds of years and is of great traditional significance here in the city.

The richness of the religious figures carried through the streets upon magnificent pasos decorated with delicate silverwork and embroidery, together with the deep felt popular connotations of the festival itself, perfectly illustrated by the spontaneous singing of the traditional saetas issuing from the secluded corners of the historic centre of Jerez, offering the spectator a unique vision of Semana Santa in Andalucia.

The spectacle takes on additional value here in Jerez, proffering the chance to savour the beauty of the historic centre of the city at a season of the year, Spring, when the aroma of orange blossom emanates from the orange trees, permeating every corner of Jerez. Strolling around the narrow streets and picturesque squares whilst contemplating the spectacular processions presents the perfect opportunity to enter some of the most typical bars in the city and taste the delights of local gastronomy accompanied by a local sherry wine.

This combination of sensations is unique to Semana Santa in Jerez which will surely fail to leave the visitor indifferent if they wish to immerse themselves in the festivity and its multiple forms of popular expression.
